During World War II, she organized and led the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), which later merged with the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). The WAFS was the first organization of women pilots in U.S. history, and it paved the way for the creation of the WASP, which trained and deployed more than 1,000 women pilots to fly military aircraft.
