Cathay Williams was an African American woman who served in the United States Army during the late 19th century. She is notable for being the first known African American woman to enlist in the army and serve as a Buffalo Soldier. Williams enlisted in the army under the pseudonym William Cathay in order to conceal her gender. She served for two years in the 38th Infantry Regiment before being discharged due to illness.
Her service as a Buffalo Soldier was a rare accomplishment for a woman and an African American at the time and reflects her bravery and determination. Despite the challenges she faced, Williams' legacy continues to inspire and serve as a testament to the sacrifices and contributions of African American women in the military.
